Dell 962 All-In-One Inkjet Printer owners thread (W7)

Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.

Make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer.

If using Windows 7 also try...Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

All other drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

If using Windows 7, use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.

Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista(Try Vista SP2). Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Rick,

Thanks so much for the assistance. I followed your advice and installed the Vista SP2 drivers in compatibility mode, and when my laptop is connected to the printer via a USB cable, I can print.  Now here is the kicker... I later decided to have the printer set up for wireless.

I tried to add a Dell Network port, then switching it over.  Didn't work.  I also tried adding another printer by pointing to a shared printer on an XP machine.  One thing I noticed was that when the Dell printer software was installing and prompted me to plug the printer into my USB port, it appeared that Windows snuck in another driver.  I saw a message saying the printer was ready before the Dell software was done.  I also noticed that when I tried to create a new printer that two Dell print drivers were available.

Anyway, I followed your instructions to uninstall everything (ran Dell software uninstall program, rebooted, ran patch to cleanup, rebooted), then ran the Dell software setup program again (in Vista x64 SP 2 compatibility mode) and chose a Network install instead of local install. It saw the Dell printer on the wireless USB adapter and installed fine.  Everything now seems to be working wirelessly.

I guess my point for writing is to warn that when you plug in the USB cable during the Dell install, it looks like Windows 7 will sneak in another driver.  Also I'd advise doing the network install if you are going to try to use it wirelessly, rather than start with the local USB install and hope to switch over to a network port later.  Thanks again for your post.

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the printer for 60 seconds. This will reset any error message the printer is getting. Plug the printer back in.

Turn on the printer. Open up the printer and take out the black cartridge and reseat it. Do the same for the color cartridge. Now close the printer and it will print an alignment page. Any error messages?

If you still get the error message, then it's possible that the sensor in the Dell Series 5 ink cartridge is bad. If this is a new Dell Series 5 ink cartridge, then take it back to the place of purchase for a replacement or refund.

black = black side(left)                               color = color side(right)

photo cartridge = black side(left               color = color side(right)

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

It's possible to purchase a Dell Series 5 ink cartridge with a bad sensor. Please take it back to the place of purchase for a replacement.

Thanks Rick,

I have now got my AIO 962 working just fine with WIndows 7 64 bit using the Vista 64 driver running in Vista SP2 compatibility mode. Your tips worked a treat!

I disconnected the printer and removed the drivers that WIndows Update had installed, I removed them both manually and using the patch rebooting after each. I then set the Vista 64 driver ( I already had this downloaded) to run in Vista SP2 compatibility mode and ran the install with Administrator rights. Works like a dream.

You can definitely update the list to show that the AIO 962 can be made to work with Windows 7 64bit (I am running the Ultimate version but I guess it'll work for all flavours)

Haven't tried the scanning trick yet. That's next.

Thanks again for the tips.

Regards,

MelG

Rick, i have a dimension 8400 and a 962 printer. I recently (I believe but not sure after a download of microsoft system upgrades) was unable to print from my logon and eventually from my wife's logon. it seemed that the pc did the correct routing etc but was not recognized by the printer. I  followed the above instructions and got to the point of being able to print a good alignment page. then the system would not print a test page and then got a dialog box saying the system was searching for applications. this went on indefinitely so i rebooted and opened Word application to try to print. word opened but froze up when i tried to print. even the task manager would not close out Word so i did a hard shutdown. then i rebooted and was able to get to my logon, then to my desktop but the system would not load my icons at the bottom bar and would freeze (with a working hourglass) whenever i tried to open an app on the desktop. the only way to shut down is a hard s/d. so i seem to be going from bad to worse. any thoughts on this?

thanks

Bill

wstil,

Windows Updates are GREAT for Windows Only. Somwtimes Windows updates offer drivers. It will offer either the wrong drivers and/ot the drivers get installed wrong, causing many devices to fail.

Try disconnecting the printer, run the patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. You'll be prompted to restart your computer. Download the drivers that you need for your Dimension 8400.

Install the drivers. Sometimes the drivers unzip and sit there. If this happens, then look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator. Then you should get the agreement and follow the instructions.

Thanks, Rick,

as it turned out we tried the dell support center (icon on the desktop- it was one of the few that would open) and then ran an Automated Scan under the Self Help/Troubleshooting utility. although i don't understand why this worked, it did, fortunately. The printer patch and driver reinstall i performed earlier apparently were installed but not 'enabled'. somehow the utility cleaned up the problem. perhaps you understand how this worked?

In any case many thanks for your assistance!

Rick, I had issues initially with my 962, and the process you led me through worked great to get things working.  Now though, I'm getting a new error when I try and scan, and I'm not sure where it's coming from:

The procedure entry point ?Exist@CFileName@@QAE_NXZ could not be located in the dynamic library DLBXutil.dll

Any idea what is going on?  I can't scan anymore as a result of this and other errors related to the DLBXutil.dll errors.

Thanks.

Piero13,

Did you install the OCR Program? Did you open the OCR Program to activate it?

It almost looks like the drivers didn't install correctly. Since I do not know the make and model of your computer and operating system, I would say to disconnect the printer.

Run the patch until you're prompted to restart your computer. Restart your computer.

Install ONLY the drivers you need for your operating system. If using Windows 7, please use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.

When you see the message, the printer is not connected, connect the printer(powered on) at this time. Please use a 6ft or smaller USB Cable.

hockeydad_of_4,

You really did all the hard work. I jsut gave some advice for you to follow. The trick with Windows 7 is to install the problem software/devices in the compatibility mode and you should not have any problems.

Network installations are sometimes tricky, with Windows 7.

Take care,

Subject: Printer 962 for Dell Dimension 4700 with XP Operating System

When I went into step one shown in your above message--- the control panel to remove the drivers from the AIO 962 Printer, a message came up that the printer had to be installed because 'dbxDR5C.DLL' is missing and I will need to use original disc. I have the original disc from Dell but the CD/DVD not working?

I took a next step and went into the drives and downloads and attempted to download firmware to fix the CD/DVD but it would not open for me and said an administrator needed to complete the task.

At the moment I am stuck. What do I do?

Thank you

I'm having a problem connecting to my 962 printer over a wireless network.

The printer is connected via USB cable to a computer running Win XP Pro SP3, and has all the latest drivers for the printer and latest Windows updates. Naturally, I have no problem printing to the printer from this computer. This computer is also connected to a wireless router via ethernet cable.  The problem I'm having comes when trying to the connect to the printer via the wireless network from a Netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (also with all the latest Windows updates and Java). The printer itself also has the latest firmware updates, is "shared" on the network, and has peer-to-peer enabled.

When attempting to install the printer to the Netbook, I used the Vista 64 SP2 drivers in compatibility mode.  I chose a network installation (peer-to-peer client of course), and it found the printer at the appropriate step and appeared to correctly install the printer and the AIO software completely. The printer was listed under my devices and printers (correctly marked as default printer), and I could right click it, choose printer properties, and view the expected details concerning the printer--including having the correct port checked for use with the printer.

However, when I attempted to print something, I encountered a problem. The computer would appear to try to print and would put the document in the queue for the printer, but after a minute or so, a message would pop-up saying that the computer could not communicate with the printer. Restarting the host and client computers did nothing to help. Also, if I navigate to the printer using the network connections center and attempt to connect to the printer this way, a dialogue box pops up quickly saying "finishing installation" and then an error message replaces it saying cannot connect to printer. The "details" for this error message are "operation failed with error 0x0000000d."

Any ideas?

 Griffdom,

The printer is connected to the XP machine and can print. It's also setup for printer sharing, correct?

Virus programs and firewalls are probably blocking communications.

Try reading the top one probably has the items you need. Virus programs on both comuters need to allow access.

Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP This works both ways.

Thank you for the help and the links Rick, but after perusing the links and implementing anything that seemed appropriate, the problem remains.

To answer you first two concerns: yes, the printer was setup for sharing, and I had disabled both the AV and firewall programs on both computers while trying this just in case.

In order to make sure the printer could be connected to wirelessly, I brought a Vista32 laptop and attempted to print from that over the network. After some initial difficulty communicating with the printer from that machine, I was able to connect and print over the network from it. So, the printer is setup correctly to be shared over the network.

Then to make sure the 7 Home Premium netbook could print to the printer at all, I connected the printer directly to it via usb. This worked just fine using the Vista 64 drivers. So, the drivers work for the netbook to print to this printer. And I'm almost positive that I have the settings on the netbook adjusted so that it should be able to connect and print to a network printer.

After that, I attempted to connect with the netbook over the network in the following ways:

1) by "add a new printer", "network printer", specifying \\computername\printername

2)  by "add a new printer", "local printer", and specifying the \\computername\printername port.

3) by navigating to the shared printer on the host computer using network places, and attempting to connect directly to it.

4) by plugging in the printer directly to the laptop. Then plugging it into the desktop and changing the port on the laptop to \\computername\printername.

5) by installing the Vista64 drivers, printer, and software package in Vista SP2 compatibility mode from the driver package.

For all the above attempts, I would completely clear the netbook of the printer and drivers, and I had the AV and firewall programs on both computers disabled. And naturally I was using the Vista 64 bit drivers, except once I tried the 32 bit drivers, but that didn't work at all. I also tried numerous variations on the above methods and various other tricks and methods I found searching the internet; all to no avail.

Depending on what method I used to connect, it would either:

1) stall out while installing the printer, but after rebooting would appear to be installed correctly. However, the netbook could not communicate with the printer.

2) appear to install correctly, but the netbook could not communicate with the printer.

3) almost finish installing, then pop up the error message saying it couldn't install.

Regardless of the method used, if I navigated to the printer on the host computer using network places after installation and attempted to connect to it, it would attempt to finish the installation and then pop up the error message saying it couldn't.

I'm pretty much out of ideas here, but I would like to add a few things.

In searching the internet, I have come to realize that Windows 7 Home Premium does not come with the Print Management Console snap-in, nor can it be installed (I don't think). Some people believe this interferes with the ability of Home Premium systems to connect to any network printer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731058.aspx  However, others seem to have gotten Home Premium systems connected to network printers on XP systems: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/problem-connecting-windows-7-64-bit-laptop-to-hp/94a79791-5750-44f5-9ffd-805993571b1e

Also, when I connected the printer directly to my netbook, the icon for the printer in the printers folder LOOKED like the printer--like it was the correct icon. All the other times, the icon was just the generic printer icon Windows assigns to any generic printer.

Anyway, sorry for the VERY long-winded post; I'm just frustrated.

Any suggestions?
