Dell 720 Color Inkjet Printer owners thread (W7)

Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista computers, until it prompts you to restart your computer.

If using Windows 7 also try...Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

If using Windows 7, use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.

Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista(Try Vista SP2). Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)

I was able to install the vista driver and then print. I did not do anything special to set the compatibility mode. So far I have encountered no problems. I printed the alignment page and test page that installation delivers, then a very short text document and a mapquest page saved to a document. I had printer properties set to use only black and white, as is my usual practice.

So far, so good.

Start with the Dell System Software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

Then use the Vista drivers for the printer in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode Once the drivers are installed, you'll get prompted to connect the printer(powered on)

Dell Series 1 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 1 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

It's possible to get a Dell Series 1 ink cartridge with a bad sensor. I would that these back to the place of purchase for a replacement or a refund.

I downloaded the patch to remove the printer (even though I think I may have already removed it) you listed above and it ran and my computer rebooted, but now since it restarted the bar with icons that were shortcuts to various things (I don't know what its called, it was automatic, had a camera for all the photo options, music, games, ect.) that went across the top of my desktop screen is no longer there, and I am wondering what happened, if other things were removed by that patch too.  PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

What I am referring to that has been removed is the Dell Dock Bar.  when I searched my computer for it, I was told it has been removed.  Why did this happen?  Did that patch remove ALL of my Dell software?  What can I do to get all the software pack if that's what happened.  The dock bar was there right before, and after that patch ran it was removed.  HELP PLEASE!

alissa39,

The patch was a printer cleanup utility and was supposed to only remove the printer. You can download Dell Dock, again.

If you notice that you're missing any other programs, like Dell Quickset, if you have a laptop, just go to  Drivers & Downloads, enter your service tag number and you should then see a list of drivers to download. Everything is there.

I looked up quickset, and am missing that also.  When I went to Drivers & Downloads it gave me a large list of downloads that were recommended or optional.  Are these all the drivers/downloads, or just the ones I don't have?  Should I download all of the recommended ones?

Thankyou so much for your help

alissa39,

Only download what you think was removed. The others are probably there. Applications and input devices are the ones to look at.

It's basically, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. Just download and install what you notice you're missing.

Getting very frustrated.  I also have a Dell 720.  I have followed all of the above instructions but can't get it to work with my desktop and Win 7.  About 75% into the install process it says driver not successfully installed.  I have run the uninstall file, restarted, installed the driver file, several times now, but still the same result.

I have clicked run as administrator and compatibility mode for Vista sp2.

Before I go to reinstall each time I have checked printer and devices in control panel, it shows none, so I'm assuming the uninstall is working each time.  After driver install, printer troubleshoot, just says driver not installed.

Printer is not connected when I uninstall old drivers and is connected once I run setup.exe.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
