Problems upgrading RAM

Hi everyone. I'm having issues upgrading the ram of my laptop, it's a Dell Latitude 5400. It currently has 16 GB of ram, I recently installed 2 modules of 16 GB each to reach the max of 32 GB, accepted according to laptop specs.

However I have a problem, after upgrading it, the laptop doesn't start and led indicators blink 2 amber and 3 white, according to dell it is a display issue. If I reinstall the old modules all works correctly again.

Now, when I install an old memory in slot 1 and a new memory in slot 2 it works, I tried it with both new modules, but if I install a new module in slot 1 and an old one in slot 2 it fails with the same code.

Any clue?

Thanks!

It would help to know the exact memory module part number you've tried, but it sounds like the system doesn't correctly set itself for the new RAM's parameters.  Check with the supplier of the memory for compatibility information.

@ejn63 Thank you.

This is the part number: Kingston kf426s16ib/16

So, if this is a compatibility issue, would it be normal that the new module only works along with an old module? I mean, it shouldn't work at all, isn't it?

It is a compatibility issue.  It's XMP RAM, designed for high performance gaming systems -- it depends on the system having the ability to have RAM speed set manually.  Your system has no such settings.  Running one of these in parallel with an existing module works because the following module (the new one) inherits the automatic settings from the CPU and system board.

You'll never get a pair of these to work in your system.

Return the modules and purchase the RAM Kingston tested to work with your system (link below) or from another vendor like Crucial that guarantees compatibility.
