Coil whine Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 when connected to WD22TB4 dock

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Inspiron 16 Plus (7640) and build quality / performance wise it is a nice notebook, but it has one major flaw.

The problem is: When the notebook is connected to the WD22TB4 dock, is at 100% state of charge and the CPU utilization is below 50% it has significant amount of coil whine. It is at such a high pitch and noise level that you can clearly hear it over the fans spinning and it is very distracting/annoying.

When I connect the 130W USB-C charger it doesn't have that issue. It is also not a problem of the dock since my old XPS 15 and work notebook don't have that issue.

I already contacted support and they sent me a replacement unit that has the exact same fault.

So either I'm incredibly unlucky, because I both units have this issue and i could not find another post about this problem or this is a hardware design fault of this notebook.

Has anyone else had a similar problem with this combination Inspiron 16 Plus (7640) + Dell WD22TB4 ?

To the Dell support:

- Yes the drivers on the notebook are all up to date

- Yes the dock and its driver are up to date

- Yes Windows is up to date

Solutions I already tried:

- I already reset the UEFI back to factory settings --> Same issue

- Disconnected both monitors, usb devices and everything else from the dock  --> Same issue

- Additionally connected the 130W barrel charger, to the notebook while it is connected to the dock via USB-C / Thunderbolt cable --> Same issue

- Tried every charging mode that is available in the MyDell app --> Same issue

- Deactivated dynamic charging in the MyDell app --> Same issue

- Even ordered and tried another WD22TB4 --> Same issue

- Tried it with my old Dell WD19TB dock --> Same issue

I'm very thankful if anyone has another suggest I could try, otherwise I'm just gonna send both of them back.

Hi,

Same problem like me with XPS 17 9730 and WD22TB4

Coil Shine from W22TB4 when i plug on my DELL

The last chance, and it's run with no problem : find a DELL docking TB16 with 240W power supply : With this, no problem ! @dell : can you fix it, it's crazy like the old TB16 running perfectly and new W22TB4 can coil whine... bad quality i think. I'm not happy by DELL for this part.
